  • Hello!

We are the Fagerlunds. We like cupcakes. A lot. Pierre can usually be found at the architecture office, and Lyndsey with a camera around her neck. Max loves his Legos and Elsa loves to gnaw on her hands.

Trunk or Treat

We had a neighborhood trunk or treat tonight, so Max got to wear his “Curious George” costume. I was SO worried that he wouldn’t put it on that I actually prayed that he would like it! He started to fuss when I put on the pants, but thankfully he calmed down and let me put on the rest. Later when it was over, he didn’t want to take it off! He kept looking at himself in the mirror and saying, “There’s George!”

He picked up on trick or treating right away and was so cute holding out his Cars bag. Hopefully he is still excited on Monday for the real thing, and his parade at school. I’m really bummed I have to work.

While Max was adorable, Pierre was, um…

I told him that Harry Potter didn’t have weird teeth, but he insisted on wearing them anyway. At least he got some laughs!

Earlier in the day we stopped by the Trick or Treat Village at the park and Max loved the slide!

On the way back to the car, Max stopped to bury himself in the leaves.

Mandy Bradshaw - Max was adorable! And Pierre? Hilarious! I don’t know which I liked better, the teeth or the firebolt 3000 he’s got there!

Sam - Too cute. I bet you guys had a lot of fun! Max looks dang cute in the leaves! :) Tell Pierre that it’s okay if he’s got jacked up teeth Harry Potter doesn’t care! :) hehe.

surprise!

Oh, I’ve been dying to post these…

Yes! We are having another baby! Okay, so now for the full story…these photos were actually from May 3rd, THE day I found out and told Pierre I was pregnant. I am still so in love with these photos…I’m so glad I decided to photograph his reaction! This is why I am a photographer after all, to record life’s awesome moments!

The girls will probably enjoy this more than the guys, so guys (if there are any that read our blog), feel free to skip the story.

So the week before I was in Seattle. And I ate. and ate. and ate. That was the first clue, although I always eat way too much of my mom’s cooking anyway. But there were other signs, so I figured I’d find out with Pierre when I got home. I went to get tests and stopped to get a pizza, but I had to wait awhile for it to cook. Meanwhile, I was working myself up…I had had far too many negative tests, and I thought, I’m done worrying, I’m taking this bad boy right now. So I found out in the bathroom at Village Pizza! And was in shock. After all, it took years of trying and fertility to get pregnant with Max and we’ve been trying pretty much since he was born because we thought our chances would be better. I had been putting off fertility treatments for months, telling myself I just couldn’t deal with it, and I was so happy with Max. But wow, it happened.

Anyway, when I finally got home, Pierre was eating his pizza, not in a good mood, and probably didn’t look his best (although what is more handsome than a guy shedding tears?!) but HOW COULD I WAIT?! I got out the camera, the news was bursting out of me! So I told him and took a picture. He looked shocked. Then I started laughing so hard that he thought I was joking and got really mad. I laughed even harder saying over again, I really am! I really am! Then I got the first photo on this post, and showed him the test, which was the second photo. Then I got the third photo and we cried together. Awwwww.

That didn’t last long, I had to show Max his big brother shirt, put it on him and call my mom on the computer. She was thrilled…no surprise there, as every single person at her ward the week before had told me how badly she wants another grandchild! Well, my wish and her wish came true. And of course, my dad and Pierre’s parents are thrilled as well!

Happy 11th anniversary, Pierre, I can’t wait for our next big adventure in January!

Like I said a few weeks ago, you looked beautiful, maybe I caught a glimpse of that maternal glow. :) Or more appropriately, Mr. Chair noticed it and had to point it out. So so happy for you and your family. Babies are miracles and I am so glad for you.

olympic sculpture park in seattle

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks!! Max and I went to California, and Pierre, Max and I went up to Sequim, Washington for his grandfather’s memorial. Then Max and I have been in Sammamish with my parents. We had a little time as a family before I dropped off Pierre at the airport, so we hung out at the Olympic Sculpture Park in beautiful weather! It’s been on and off rain and sun while we’ve been here, but we’ve soaked up the sun when we could.

Emily Ybarra - Beautiful photos Lyndsey!

Qualified.

Today Max had his assessment with Alpine School District. He qualified for services, which was wonderful because he needs it, but I still shed a couple tears as they told me. I was so proud of him though…he sat for a couple hours and completed what they asked of him. He has been so much more willing to learn since he started preschool and I’ve been working with him at home. He loved the matching test and scored average, which was great. On the language test, he was practically off the charts for receptive language. His ability was above a five year old. However, expressive language, not surprisingly to me, was very low. His gap was so wide that they were able to qualify him for a “developmental delay.” Autism made a little more sense to me today. Max is smart and understands so much, but somehow autism prevents him from connecting his knowledge to the “real world.” Something gets in the way of his communication and ability to relate to others. I believe everything is in there and I’m going to do every thing I can to teach Max to use his knowledge functionally.

I made a very difficult decision at the beginning of March to resign from my P.E./Music teaching position. As we learned more and more throughout the school year about what was going on with Max, I realized more and more that I wasn’t able to give him what he needed while I was spread so thin. Although I hated to leave my position before the year was over, Pierre and I both felt such peace about the decision. I felt such joy in reconnecting with Max and finally knew why I needed a background in education…to be Max’s teacher and advocate. Last week we had some neat experiences. I set up a corner of our office as a little “school” for Max (and had flashbacks of making my brother sit at a desk and listen while I taught, haha). I wanted to continue the routines he does in preschool, so I rummaged through my teaching stuff in the basement to find some things to start with. We set up a calendar and some math routines and a sign language poster. When before he was fighting with me during adult-led activities, now he will sit and listen intently. Of course he still has his thumb in his mouth, as he does when he is doing something a little uncomfortable for him. (And the speech specialist today said I need to start taking care of the thumb situation…yikes.)He LOVED the sign language chart. We learned a new letter each day…below he is making the b. I asked him to show me the b after he figured it out and he put it right next to his face. I can’t even put into words what that photo means to me, I love it.

I found this “All About Me” poster in my third grade stuff…we had a great time filling it out. He drew the Mickey himself!

I drew the “picture” below, and said to Max, “Look, it’s dada, mama, max, and…who’s this?” He said, “A bug!!!” (It is supposed to be Murphy…I couldn’t stop laughing.)

Emily Ybarra - You are such a good mommy/teacher/advocate! And Max has made so much progress already! As far as the thumb sucking, please think about calling Angela, Cruise’s Occupational Therapist, I know she can help with that.

You’re awesome!

Jenny Zuniga - He is so cute Lyndsey! Great pictures! I can’t believe he drew that Mickey!!! I just got some “no bite” polish for Ava’s nails. She is a nail biter. The lady at the beauty supply store said it works wonders for thumb suckers too. :)

Gramma - He is the most perfect child on the planet. Amen. The “B” is for Beautiful Boy.

Preschool!

Max went to his first day of preschool today! I took the (in)famous porch shots that every mother takes as they go out the door (even though we usually go out the garage.). You can see he was a little tired. But I can always get a little smile out of him by asking him point to Mickey!

We are lucky to have found a wonderful preschool for him at Kids on the Move to meet his needs. I don’t know where we would be without KOTM. Thanks to the awesome people that work there, we’ve been doing early intervention with Max for almost a year. By the time I knew he was on the autism spectrum, we already had help for him in place, and he had already made so much progress (even though sometimes it seems there has been a loss of skills). Basically, they empower parents to know how to help your child. I’ve been so thankful that they have this philosophy so that I had the support I needed to feel successful as a mother. They are a private, non-profit agency that works with the state to provide early intervention programs. He is moving into the Bridges program now that he is turning 3; it “bridges” the gap between early intervention and public education. He will also be testing with the school district soon to see if he qualifies for their preschool services.

While I’m on the topic of KOTM, I’m so excited that I’ll be working with them this month to use art to promote their organization/raise autism awareness! I get to photograph some of the sweet children there and the photos will be used to show how Kids on the Move has supported their development. I’ve been thinking for awhile now that I’d like to work with children that have special needs (like Max) as a photographer. When I think back, Max is really the reason I wanted to become a professional photographer. I felt something when I photographed him. I felt his special spirit and loved the challenge of capturing it with an image. I felt connected to him when he wasn’t looking at me, or acknowledging I was there. Even though he wouldn’t look right at the camera, I was documenting his life, and telling his story, although I didn’t know until recently what story I was telling. (And apparently I was only telling my computer because I haven’t done anything with them. I have felt strongly lately that I need to record Max’s autism journey, so hopefully that will change!)

Back to today’s fun…Max was super quiet and sucked his thumb until they learned about the weather and did a little project. Then he loved soaking water into cotton balls and squeezing it out like rain. It was really cute to watch him open up a little bit as the 2 hours went on. At first they had to help him raise his hand, but by the end he did it by himself. He did have one freak out when they let a balloon go…I think it is sensory overload for him. I was proud of him when he went back to his chair, though. He did really well at staying in his seat!

Okay, this was the funniest thing ever. They did yoga with the kiddos, and Max didn’t quite get it. I was so happy he wanted to participate though. So they sat on their knees and Max would stick his legs right out (I don’t think it was comfortable for him), and then he’d go down on his tummy.

He pretty much stayed that way, and then the teacher instructed the kids to reach up (they were doing the pose shown), and so Max would reach up (with his legs too) along with them but it didn’t quite work. It was so funny! I didn’t catch the photo til his hands were coming down, but it still cracks me up.

He was a pro at arm circles though! He loves anything that has to do with circles.

And he touched his toes when they asked, sooooo cute.

Max loved his first day of school and we can’t wait for Friday to go again!
